چکیده

At present, the best view of the activity of a neural circuit is provided by multipleelectrode extracellular recording technologies. These technologies are able to simultaneously measure spike trains from up to a few hundred cells in one or more brain areas during each trial. However, characterizing the dynamics of the circuit from such data is made difficult, both by the point-like nature of the spikes and by the variability in the responses to identical repeated trials. By their nature, spikes give us only an occasional view of the process from which they are generated.

Cortical Preparatory Activity: Representation of Movement or First Cog in a Dynamical Machine?

The motor cortices are active during both movement and movement preparation. A common assumption is that preparatory activity constitutes a subthreshold form of movement activity: a neuron active during rightward movements becomes modestly active during preparation of a rightward movement. We asked whether this pattern of activity is, in fact, observed. We found that it was not: at the level of...

Extracting Dynamical Structure Embedded in Neural Activity

Spiking activity from neurophysiological experiments often exhibits dynamics beyond that driven by external stimulation, presumably reflecting the extensive recurrence of neural circuitry. Characterizing these dynamics may reveal important features of neural computation, particularly during internally-driven cognitive operations. For example, the activity of premotor cortex (PMd) neurons during...

Preparation for movement: neural representations of intended direction in three motor areas of the monkey.

1. The purpose of this study was to compare the functional properties of neurons in three interrelated motor areas that have been implicated in the planning and execution of visually guided limb movements. All three structures, the supplementary motor area (SMA), primary motor cortex (MC), and the putamen, are components of the basal ganglia-thalamocortical "motor circuit." The focus of this re...

Functional modulation of corticospinal excitability with adaptation of wrist movements to novel dynamical environments.

Adaptation of reaching movements to a novel dynamic environment is associated with changes in neuronal activity in the primary motor cortex (M1), suggesting that M1 neurons are part of the internal model. Here, we investigated whether such changes in neuronal activity, resulting from motor adaptation, were also accompanied by changes in human corticospinal excitability, which reflects M1 activi...

A Dynamical Basis Set for Generating Reaches.

The motor cortex was the one of the first cortical areas to be explored electrophysiologically, yet little agreement has emerged regarding its basic response properties. Often it is assumed that single-neuron responses reflect a preference for a particular movement or movement variable. It may be further assumed that movement is generated by (or at least accompanied by) a growing population-lev...
